Marriage Counseling Q + A
Q: What is your approach to marriage counseling?
A: We like to think that every couple presents as unique individuals, thus, also being unique as a couple. Therapy involves some common conversations, but Forged As One likes to develop a specific therapy for each couple. We work together to see how common patterns present in your relationship.
Q: Do you work with only Christian couples?
A: No. We work with non-Christian couples, but hold to basic Christian foundational beliefs about marriage. We highly value marriage and work diligently with our clients to preserve it. We believe these core beliefs and desires are in all people. Christian or not, people want to feel loved, safe, heard, connected and desire meaning in their lives and marriages.
Q: What is your style of counseling?
A: Direct, supportive, collaborative and honest. We do not focus our counseling on refereeing arguments or deciding “who’s wrong”, rather look to change patterns. Identifying blame does not heal a marriage.
Q: Do you work people through divorcing?
A: No. Forged As One works in the area of healing, forgiveness and restoration.

Q: Why hasn’t counseling worked in the past for me?
A: There are a lot of reasons for this, but generally speaking, the focus needs to be on pattern recognition and seeing the problem external to your spouse, not seeing “them” as the problem. Long standing patterns of hopelessness can turn someone away from a clear perspective on a problem and conclude that because they can’t fix it, their spouse must be the issue. This is most often not the case.
Q: What if my spouse will not come?
A: Come to counseling individually. You can promote change even if they are unwilling to come.
Q: What should I expect for my first session?
A: Hopefully a low stress environment with freedom to ask questions, assessing if their is a mutual fit and getting to know the couple and their history. Every counselor is different and seeing if the fit is good helps all involved.
